Inline Process Refractometer, Based on New Smart-Sensor, Achieves Five-Fold Increase in Performance

misco-vip2-refractometer-lr(CLEVELAND, OH – April 8, 2013) The VIP2 inline process refractometer represents one of the latest advancements in smart-sensor technology. Inline refractometers have long been used to measure the concentration or mixture ratio of fluids in a process stream. Typical inline refractometers consist of either a dumb-sensor cabled to a proprietary external control box, or a sensor with the control unit awkwardly situated on its back. In either case, it is the control unit that converts the readings into digital or analog signals and then sends them to a PLC or process controller. MISCO has shattered the old paradigm with the new VIP2 Inline Process Refractometer.

All the intelligence for processing and communication, previously accomplished in the external control box, is now contained within the very small VIP2 smart-sensor itself, so no external control unit is necessary. This means that the sensor, which is half the size of a can of soda-pop, is easier to deploy and maintain.

Thanks to MISCO’s trademark IRIS Technology, the VIP2 achieves a five-fold performance increase and has doubled both the measurement range and pressure rating of MISCO’s previous inline refractometers. The VIP2 inline refractometer will instantly and accurately measure refractive index, temperature correct the reading, convert refractive index into a more user-friendly unit of measure, and then transmit the results to a data capture/control system.

Communication between the sensor and a PLC or process controller is accomplished through the sensor’s power/communication cable. Users can select from a list of communication options, including RS232 digital output, or 4 to 20 mA and 0 to 10 volt analog outputs. The sensor is easily configured and calibrated by connecting it to the USB port on a Windows® computer equipped with the accompanying software application.

The rugged VIP2 sensor is machined to exacting standards from 316L stainless steel and passivated for optimal corrosion resistance. Titanium and Hastelloy versions are also available. Designed to withstand years of service in the harshest industrial environments, the VIP2’s IP68 sensor features a precision ground sapphire optic, the next hardest substance to diamond, providing a virtually scratch-proof optical interface between the sensor and the process fluid.

The sensor is mounted in a process stream using an industry-standard two inch tri-clamp fitting, which allows the sensor to be quickly mounted and dismounted by hand and without the need for tools. The VIP2, along with MISCO’s other inline refractometers, is made in the USA. More information on the VIP2 Inline Refractometer can be found on the MISCO website at http://www.misco.com/inline

“The new VIP2 inline refractometer reflects our innovative spirit and unrivaled refractometer technology,” said Michael Caminer, from the MISCO marketing group. “We are proud of the quality/performance standard set by the VIP2 inline refractometer and excited about the contribution it will make to the process industry.”
